Republicans are the Party of Cognitive Dissonance

Republicans have no policies. None.  Zero. So they fill the void by attempting to obstruct Biden/Democratic policy and legislative proposals that are beneficial to — and supported by — the American public; concocting culture wars; and promoting revisionist history. Of course, sometimes these “lofty goals” conflict and collide with each other.

As do most Americans, Republicans laud the Boston Tea Party as a key moment in galvanizing the colonies against repressive British policies. However, in the culture war arena, Republicans rail against destruction of private property during protests in cities across the country last summer in response to the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis policeman. “Looting and destroying property is never justified!” they argue, as if the rebellious colonists were just making tea by throwing it off the ships into Boston Harbor.  Republicans who bowed to the wacko Tea Party movement apparently have no sense of irony.

Republicans also decried the protests that damaged a federal courthouse in Portland (during non-business hours) and toppled federal statues, but are mind-numbingly complacent about the Capitol Insurrection that not only caused damage to the building, but deaths and serious injuries to the police attempting to protect it, as well as disruption of a key function of Congress in counting the certified electoral votes of each state in the Presidential election, that is, an assault on American democracy itself.

No big deal to Republicans, just a normal tourist day at the Capitol, time to move along. The insurrectionists were white “patriots” who were upset about allegations of election fraud and stealing, that Republicans knew were lies, but were using to further their craven attempt to keep Trump in power. Thus, the party that has assailed the “tyranny” of mask mandates to protect the public during a pandemic, views as no big deal a riot designed to install an actual tyrant, against the express will of the people.

QAnon, the next extreme in Republican wackiness, supposedly is dead set against pedophilia, but Q darling Marjorie Taylor Greene has now embarked on a rally tour with Matt Gaetz, currently under federal investigation (initiated by Bill Barr’s Justice Department under Trump), to claim that America Comes First!

Not content with “moving on” from the Capitol Insurrection, the Republican hierarchy has now made acceptance of the Big Lie, the discredited attempt by Trump to “justify” his multiple failed challenges to the results of the 2020 election, a dogma that must be accepted by party candidates and legislators, along with de-coupling Trump from any responsibility for the Insurrection, which he claimed was actually a love fest. Is your head spinning yet? Of course, it is. A normal person could not hold all these thoughts simultaneously. But Republicans do. And must, if they want to stay in the Party. But who would want to??
