President Donald Trump’s commencement address at Liberty University over the weekend made headlines for, surprisingly, focusing on himself rather than on the graduates.  And when he did turn to the graduates, he seemed to crib his message from Elle Woods in Legally Blonde.  Lost in this controversy was the anomalous introduction of Trump by University President, Jerry Falwell, Jr., the pistol-packing proselytizer who inherited his position from his patriarch.  Here it is:

Class of 2017 prospective graduates, welcome.

Liberty University is based on Christian Values.  So who better to address the members of this class as you prepare to go out into the world but a man who embodies the exact opposite of those values, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump!

During the presidential campaign, I said that it was the moral duty of Evangelical Christians to vote for Donald Trump, and here’s why.

Jesus valued humility, honesty, restraint, and service to others.

Trump epitomizes braggadocio, grabbing all he can for himself, and unrestrained, vulgar actions and talk.

Jesus values the poor.

Trump only values the rich.  The poor aren’t going to donate a million dollars to this University to help us continue the mission my father started.

Jesus values human life.

Trump honors human life as long as it is still in the womb.  There it is sacred and sacrosanct.  Once you’re out, you’re on your own.  No healthcare, no nothin’.  And no maternity care either, to ensure the health of the unborn!.

Jesus wants you to be involved in something bigger than yourself.

Trump believes there is nothing bigger than himself, so supporting his campaign was clearly being involved in something bigger than yourself.

Jesus stoically accepted the scourging of his captors without complaint.

Trump whines about every tiny perceived slight, whether real or imagined.

Jesus rebuked his disciple who attempted to fight his captors.

Trump encouraged his crowds to rough up anyone who had the temerity to challenge him.

Jesus practices and preaches obedience to God’s commandments.

Trump honors God’s commandments in the breach, and he understands that the Second Amendment is more important than the Second Commandment.

So please help me give a warm Liberty U. welcome to the man who would be King, Donald Trump!
